Sunset Tower
Looming high over the Crescent Beach on Yuguang Island is a 40-odd-meter-high weblike construction of bamboo.
As you approach the beach you will find a couple of ramshackle bamboo structures, for taking much needed shelter in the hot summer sun, or for storing your belongings as you prepare for a day at the seaside. There was a second, much larger, structure as well. One which does not make it clear exactly how the public should react to.
This tower, made from discarded oyster pens was created by British artist, Hugo. Construction began in 2013 and the maintenance and further additions continued until 2019. The tower quickly took on a life of it’s own, consisting of an intricate web and several cathedral-like spires. The tower was beloved by visitors to the beach, and making for a great silhouette against the sunset sky.
Though tragedy struck in 2016 as a storm toppled the top half of the main spire, the tower remained in tact until it was dismantled in summer 2019. After a death was caused by another bamboo structure in extreme windy conditions, this piece of art was considered to be too risky to leave standing.
Know Before You Go
