The Airplanes

Hidden in plain sight at the top of a hill a few hundred meters to the south of Bitola city centre is an abandoned military base with the remain of a couple of fighter jets. Bitola residents are generally aware of the place but, perhaps unsurprisingly, it doesn’t seem to make it into any of the tourist guides for the city. The planes are covered in graffiti and are slowly disintegrating but still fascinating to visit, plus there are great views of Bitola. The site has been described as a children’s playground but you may find that Macedonians have a different attitude to Health and Safety than your own country!
