Although a predominantly Muslim country, Syria is home to a number of churches and estimates vary of 1 5 - 10% Christian population. 

The Bible tells the story of a man named Paul who was sent to Damascus in the very early years of the first century BCE to persecute the early Christians. But he converted to Christianity after his sight was restored by a man named Anias. Paul began preaching in Damascus until he was forced to flee for his life. According to the Bible, is friends helped him escape by lowering him over the city walls in a basket.

The Church of St Paul, which was opened in 1923,, is situated right next to the city walls and is said to be on the site of Paul’s escape.
