The Flying Nun

The true meaning behind this sculpture remains unknown.

Passing the corner where Nándor utca turns into Országház utca is an unusual statue that overlooks the cars and pedestrians below.

Hidden on the corner of the building is a female figure that appears to be dressed as a nun passing through the building’s walls. Locals have dubbed her the “Flying Nun.”

There are still traces of blue paint on the figure’s dress, although the rest appears to have faded over time.

Upon closer inspection, the sculpture reveals the figure is covering her mouth as if she has just witnessed something horrific. Is she gasping in horror at the destruction of the church that once stood opposite her location?  Is she horrified at her current predicament, stuck passing through the building?  No one seems to know for sure.

Know Before You Go

The nun can be found where Nándor utca turns into Országház utca, if you are facing the old tower turn around and look up.
