The Wicked Witch of Monroe

Hannah Hovey, aka Hannah Cranna, was accused of practicing witchcraft due to the untimely and suspicious death of her husband, Captain Joseph Hovey, who fell off a cliff during an evening walk. The townspeople believed Hannah had employed witchcraft to cause her husband’s disorientation and death, rather than attributing it to mere misfortune.

Hannah, mischievously exploiting the villagers’ superstitions, started flaunting her witchcraft. Before she died at age 77, she told her neighbors that her coffin must be carried to her grave by hand and that she must not be buried before sundown.  Her neighbors ignored her instructions and  pulled her coffin through the snow by sled to her gravesite. The coffin fell off the sled and slid all the way back down to the front door of her house. When the townspeople returned to Hannah’s house, they found it engulfed in flames. It has been reported that a sudden apparition occurs in the middle of Spring Hill Road. If one jumps on her grave three times, her hand is said to grab and pull you underground.

Know Before You Go

Located in Trumbull's Gregory's Four Corners Burial Ground, Hannah's remains lie in a small cemetery on a hillside with aged stones. Her stone is regularly cleaned, making it stand out among the others and easily visible from the street at the crest of the hill.
