The area of Kasba Peth next to Shaniwar Wada is considered to be the oldest part of Pune. It was from Kasba Peth that the city originated and expanded. The area was once called Kasabe Pune and was enclosed in a military fortification called Hissar Fort, which is believed to have been built sometime during the 13th or 14th century.

Before the fort was built, this area had a settlement of houses. Historically, human settlements have always preferred to settle next to sources of water such as rivers or lakes or the sea. Likewise, this area of Kasba Peth is located right next to the Mutha River. It also has close proximity to two water streams or brooks called Ambil Odha and Nagzari Odha, which, along with the river, were very important sources of water to the residents back then. (Odha means a water stream or a brook).

A short distance north of Kasba Ganpati Temple, there is a square with an old tree. Under the tree is a temple, which is on a raised stone plinth. Around the spot, there are narrow lanes and alleys going in all directions. The alleys have ancient buildings with artistic balconies, historic mansions, creaking old doors and windows, and trees sprouting out of stone and brick walls. The maze of old lanes evokes a sense of historical nostalgia and charm.

It is believed that this square is probably the oldest continuously inhabited area of Pune and can thus be considered to be the city’s historical center. Based on the archaeological findings from the area, historians and experts believe that there has been human settlement in this area from as far back as the second century AD.
