The house of Gauss – Göttingen, Germany - Atlas Obscura

Carl Frederick Gauss is one of Germanies most famed scientists. His mathematical, physical and astronomical theories still being used today. In the later stages of his life he lived in what is now called the old Göttingen observatory.(link) but before that, especially during his student life, he lived inside the city center within the defensive walls from 1796-1798.

It is said that Gauss hated living inside the city as he was not really the biggest people person and was very tired of all the obligations that came with his stature. At later stages of his life he lived in the observatory and is known to have said that he loved it. As in this time the city gates would still close at night and he had the perfect excuse not to come to all these Social events.

The house is currently in use as a normal living house with a shop at the bottom. A plaque tells bypasses that Gauss lived here, but to can’t enter sadly.
