In Philadelphia? Already seen the Liberty Bell but thought it looked a bit broken? Visit the Justice Bell, a replica commissioned (without the crack) in 1915. The bell was taken on a 5,000 mile tour of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties to raise awareness of women’s suffrage. The clapper was purposefully chained to represent the lack of voice allowed to the women of America. After women’s suffrage was ratified in 1920 in the 19th Amendment, the bell was brought to Independence Mall in Philadelphia and sounded once for each state in the union.
The Justice Bell is on permanent display at Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge.
