Eppelein von Gailingen, was a Frankish robber baron in the 14th century. He raided merchants on the trade routes around Nuremberg and was therefore declared an outlaw.

After 12 years he was captured and sentenced to death by hanging. According to legend, his last wish was to sit on his horse once more. He was granted this wish because there was no escape from Nuremberg Castle. Surprisingly, however, he managed to do the impossible by jumping his horse over the wall of the Nuremberg moat and escaping.

Take a closer look at the sandstone wall of the castle and you can still discover the hoofprint of his horse today

Know Before You Go
