The Thrift School was built in 1884 and was designed to replace another school constructed in 1869.
In 1905, a water closet and typewriter were added. In 1909, the school closed after local residents lobbied for a school that was more accessible.
The school was sold as a private residence, and while internal alterations were made, the exterior was unchanged and retained its late 19th century schoolhouse appearance.
In 1962, the schoolhouse and 500 surrounding acres were conveyed to the Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission. It is now part of Cosca Regional Park.
Know Before You Go
Thrift School is not currently open for tours and restoration efforts are still ongoing, but it's an interesting piece of local history worthy of preservation.
