Thunderbird Restaurant
The abbreviated sign advertising the home made pies at this restaurant creates not a little teenage mirth
The Thunderbird restaurant is a roadside diner at Carmel Junction, just south of Orderville Utah, which is a convenient stopping off point for those driving through the south of Utah towards Zion National Park. It is a traditional diner with a south western decor that reflects the great history of such establishments in the provision of hospitality to tourists visiting the great national parks in the state. The walls are adorned with metal signs dating back as far as the 1940s. There is also a great collection of model cars and licence plates.
The menu is a mix of local , national and international fare. For those customers from the UK however the sight of a “scone” on the menu should not encourage a longing for the traditional fruit filled baked goods that they are used to. In this case a scone is used to describe a local fried bread product more like a rather dense beginet. Actually very nice with ice cream.
The most famous feature of the place is its advertising sign which states that is is the “home of the ho-made pies” along with an image of a rather scantily clad waitress . The abbreviation was originally used to get the words onto a smaller sign but the double meaning has long been a popular talking point and is a major source of giggles as teenagers pass the place in the back of their parent’s cars. Actually the home made pies are delicious.
For people from temperate climates the place has another attraction. Close to the front window hangs a feeder which attracts loads of the local species of hummingbird during spring and summer. Fascinating to watch whist you enjoy your coffee and fruit pie.
