Useldange Castle (Chateau d'Useldange)
A 12th-century castle featuring a sensory path where partially-sighted visitors can experience regional history through touch and sound.
Originally built somewhere between the 12th and 14th centuries by the lords of Useldange, the castle went through a sequence of ruination and restoration events.
Today, the castle stands as well-maintained, partial ruins with an interior section that was rebuilt in a modern style and serves as the Useldange town hall.
What makes this castle unique is its UNESCO-sponsored discovery trail for partially-sighted visitors. Weaving around the castle and up into the restored castle tower, the trail presents information about local culture through a series of 16 tactile and audio experiences.
The castle grounds include the foundations of the original chapel and an intact cemetery. Additionally, visitors can enjoy an integrated, aromatic herb garden and specially-designed panels for partially-sighted visitors, which feature information about local flora and fauna.
