Uxmal (oosh-mahl)  is a beautiful archeological site just under an hour from the city of Merida.  The pyramid of the magician is a rounded pyramid. It is quite a sight as you first enter the ruins. You would not be able to climb this particular structure, but you are able to walk on and amongst the many other structures giving you some awesome views of the ruins and surrounding landscapes. At night there is a Light & Sound show for your entertainment. You are allowed to sit on the steps in the quadrangle  as you listen to a story of the connection of the Mayans of Uxmal and their association to the Mayans of Chichen Itza.

A better option to see these ruins is to stay a few steps away from the archeological site entrance! The Lodge at Uxmal is a wonderful hotel with local charm. You could also stay at Hacienda Uxmal just across the highway from the ruins but closer to the chocolate museum.

This archeological site and the surrounding accommodations are a must see if you are in this area of the Yucatan.
