This secluded bay on the island of Poros is a magnificent snorkelling site with an archaeological secret.

If you can find a way to reach this bay  take your snorkelling gear. You will be rewarded with crystal clear waters that allow you to see the remains of a sunken city, thought to be the former main port of the island.

There used to be a taverna on the beach but  it may no longer be open (it was open in 2016). This secluded inlet on the north coast of the Greek Island of Poros  is otherwise more or less deserted (strictly speaking Poros is 2 islands connected by a bridge).

The steep sided inlet is very sheltered except when the wind blows directly into the bay and the water is normally crystal clear. Whilst snorkelling you will be able to see the roadways and foundations of the ancient town which was inundated at some time in antiquity. It is a fair way off the beach.

Try to pick a day when the wind is from the south as the water can get a bit rough if the wind is blowing into the bay.

The bay is also called Vagionia  bay.

Know Before You Go

Unless you rent a car or motorcycle or take a taxi the only easy way to get here  is by an organised tour. These can sometimes be available by boat.

As for getting to the island it is about 1 hour from Pireas, Athens, by hydrofoil. Alternatively you can travel  via the Peleponese peninsula, Poros is only about 20 minutes by ferry from Methana or shorter still both a car ferry and water taxis cross the 300m from Galatas very regularly.

The beach is very stony  in parts so best to use fins without a full foot socket and a pair of neoprene boots  if you are snorkeling.

Recent reports indicate a severe plastic litter problem here. Lots of uncertainty about current state of facilities so make sure you take something to keep you hydrated.
