Wafle Shop

This quirky triangular greasy spoon with its eye-grabbing misspelled sign has only one "f" to give.

Known by locals as “Way-full” shop, this hidden gem serves a full range of diner victuals, but where its idiosyncratic signs may be the initial hook that draws folks in, their eponymous specialty - waffles - served in both breakfast and dessert varieties, keeps ‘em coming back.

Some say the missing ‘f’ stands for fat, which tracks with a key ingredient used to make their waffles so tantalizingly tasty - clarified butter.  This translucent topper is made by removing the milk solids and leaving only the butterfat. It has a smoke point that is over 100° higher than regular butter, making it ideal for sauteing without burning the butter. It also lends a deeply rich flavor to the waffles. No stingy pats here - the butter soaks each and every pore and is a perfect vehicle for syrup, fruit, or even various breakfast meats one may pair with their waffle.

The wedge-shaped restaurant, which sits at the corner of Mt. Vernon Ave. and Russell St. like a tiny “Flatiron” building,  features a properly spelled neon sign on top. As for the errant awnings, the owners had proposed replacing them in 2012 but a hue and cry from local residents and fans of the establishment swayed them to keep the misspelled awnings as-is.

In days past, The Wafle Shop was a 24-hour operation and there were actually stories that the owners had lost every set of keys to the restaurant, but that they didn’t bother replacing them because the place was always open.  Nowadays, the hours have been scaled back but there is still ample time to get a waffle fix!

The Waffle Shop (or Wafle Shop) has been serving customers since 1950 and it continues to be a source of mirth and girth for all who are intrepid enough to step inside and take a seat at the counter!
