Weeksville Heritage Museum

Discover some of Brooklyn's 19th century roots.

Weeksville was a free black community in the 19th century. It was intentionally created for African-Americans and former slaves. It also housed some runaway slaves prior to the Civil War. The community thrived from 1840-1880 after it was started in 1838 after James Weeks bought the property in Brooklyn.
