Werder Baumblütenfest (Werder fruit wine fest)
A yearly event celebrates a wide variety of fruit wines.
The Werder Baumblütenfest is an annual festival held in the island town of Werder (Havel), that has been celebrated since 1879 during the last week of April or the first week of May.
The festival is a celebration of the regions fruit growing tradition and is held when the trees are blossoming. In recent years, this tends to be the last week of April, probably due to climate change.
The festival is the largest and oldest fruit wine festival in Germany, and is very popular with the locals, but still much of a hidden gem for those beyond these spheres.
Here you will find wines made from everything but grapes. Some of the common ones include apple, pears, rhubarb, cherry, and more. There are many stands of various sizes, some industrial and most ran by families form the area. You can even buy some of the wine to take home, but do drink it quickly as it tends to go bad within a week or so as it is free of conservatives.
Aside from the focus on fruit wines, the festival also features an extensive entertainment program, including live music, parades, and performances by both local, national, and sometimes international artists and groups.
