For those that wish to see the full breadth of the continental United States, you may do well to make the journey to the furthest point on the country’s easternmost peninsula, West Quoddy Head on the coast of Maine. The point is marked by an iconic, red-and-white-striped lighthouse dating back to 1808, when it was built to guide ships through the Quoddy Narrows.
This historic candy-striped lighthouse is located just a few miles from the charming fishing village of Lubec, where you may find lodging and several pubs vying for the title of “easternmost place to raise a pint.” The lighthouse is open for tours seasonally, but it’s dawn that you really want to be there for—if only to be one of the first people in America to see the sunrise.
Know Before You Go
The lighthouse is located within Quoddy Head State Park and open during the summer season.
