All of West Virginia’s highway measurements begin at the Zero Milestone between the State Capitol and the Kanawha River.
Kanawha Boulevard runs along the river from downtown Charleston to the Capitol. Along this road at the rear of the Capitol sits the West Virginia Zero Milestone. When it was sculpted in 1934, all measurements of roads in the state started from the stone.
Today, those measurements might be a little bit off, as the stone was moved twice for construction, once in 1938, and again in 1954 to its present location.

Along Kanawha Boulevard, the stone is directly behind the State Capitol.
