On April 8, 2016, this more than 20 foot tall Bowie knife was certified by the Guinness World Records as the World’s Largest Bowie Knife. The idea for the knife came from Bob Hadley, who dreamt up the larger-than-life knife as a way to promote the city.
James Bowie was born in Kentucky and while he had been to Texas, there is no record of him ever visiting the area that became Montague County. The city was formed in 1881, long after Bowie’s death at the Battle of the Alamo. Bowie was a noted knife-fighting legend and prominently wore a large knife after an 1827 brawl in Natchez, Mississippi. The knife was reportedly “9.5 inches long, a quarter inches thick and one and a half inches wide.
