Wyoming Territorial Prison
For 30 years, during Wyoming's infancy this prison held Wyoming's violent and desperate outlaws including Butch Cassidy.
Yee-haw! So, you’ve stumbled upon the end of the notorious Outlaw Trail, huh? But don’t worry, partner, you don’t have to rustle up any trouble to get a taste of life behind bars! Welcome to the Territorial Prison, where even the toughest outlaws like Butch Cassidy once called home sweet home.
Back in the day, this place was like the Wild West’s version of a revolving door, with over 1,200 rascals walking through those clanky iron doors. Now, instead of dodging bullets, visitors stroll through the very halls where these hombres were locked up, worked their time, and lived their… erm… not-so-charmed lives.
And let me tell ya, this ain’t your average tourist trap. Nope, this joint’s got some serious street cred—it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places, y’all! Picture an imposing stone fortress straight outta the pages of history, built way back in 1872 and spruced up again in 1990.
Nowadays, most folks prefer to take a DIY tour of the slammer, but if you’re lucky enough to swing by during the summer, you might snag one of them guided tours. Oh, and don’t forget to swing by the prison Broom Factory—bet you didn’t know those crooks were also handy with a broomstick!
But wait, there’s more! After this joint shut its doors for good, it swapped out convicts for critters, becoming a sort of real-life science lab for the University of Wyoming. Head on over to the historic horse barn and check out the exhibit, “Science on the Range.” Who knew this place had so many lives?
So, saddle up, pardner! Whether you’re a history buff, a true-crime enthusiast, or just curious about what life was like behind bars back in the day, the Wyoming Territorial Prison’s got somethin’ for everyone. Just watch out for any ghostly outlaws—rumor has it they still roam these halls after lights out!
