Trip Overview
Overview

In Nova Scotia, the presence of the ocean is everywhere. It’s especially welcome at the dinner table, where briny oysters, gargantuan scallops, fresh mussels, and Atlantic Lobster are all on the menu. On this adventure, you’ll taste it all and meet the people behind the region’s rich culinary culture. Spend a day with a lobsterman, going inside his waterside home for tales of his battles with the sea. Experience Celtic traditions that carry on in the form of rowdy barroom singalongs, tall tales told by sailor bards, and familial hospitality.

Highlights
  • Share a fresh seafood chowder lunch with a lobster fisherman in his sea shanty
  • Kayak on gentle waters through secluded islands and hidden beaches
  • Sample hyper-local produce, craft cheeses, and locally produced wines and ciders
  • Search for whales while on an eco-friendly adventure with a marine biologist
  • Visit Old Town Lunenburg, one of only two urban communities in North America designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site
  • Hunt for treasure in the vast tidal zone of the Bay of Fundy

Itineraries and daily schedules are subject to change. We expect to do everything listed in the itinerary, though the order may be rearranged based on weather or other local conditions.

Trip Leader

Leanna Eaton
Leanna’s love for capturing the attention of an audience began at the age of 11 when she won a public speaking competition with a speech about door-to-door salesmen - written by her mother. Her family was convinced she was destined for a life in Canadian politics. After successfully completing three social sciences degrees and starting a promising career at a global development agency, she seemed to be on course. Until that fateful weekend in Newfoundland…nearly two decades later and much to everyone's surprise, she now lives in Germany, having traded in her dreams of a life in politics for a career in tourism. In 2007 she met her travel industry soulmate Alba (one of the trip leaders for Atlas Obscura’s Small Wonders and Good Eats trip in Spain) in a small Berlin café and they both instantly recognized a shared vision for what travel should be and a knack for finding the special spots that reveal the soul of a place. Working together throughout Europe and Canada, their tours are unique local experiences that "could only happen here" - wherever here might be. Leanna speaks English and German fluently and could use French and Ukrainian to get by in a pinch.
