Trip Overview
Overview

Join us in Japan for a culinary adventure leading us into the bustling markets and down the historic alleyways of Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. We’ll visit a legendary fish market and Tokyo’s sprawling “Kitchen Town,” participate in multiple cooking classes and experience a traditional tea ceremony, and visit the Golden Pavilion, one of the world’s most famous temples. We’ll make a stop at Japan’s most renowned maker of wagashi, and observe the ways of the true sushi masters. In between bites of kushikatsu, nomiyaki, and tofu hot pot, we’ll be hopping on ferries and bullet trains and staying at traditional guesthouses. Along the way, we’ll gain an understanding of Japan’s singular culinary culture—past, and present, and future.

Itineraries and daily schedules are subject to change. We expect to do everything listed in the itinerary, though the order may be rearranged based on weather or other local conditions.

Traveling Solo?

You’re in good company. Solo travelers typically make up about half of our small groups. With curiosity at the center of our experiences, there’s a natural camaraderie that develops over the course of a trip. We have two options for you:

Shared Room (subject to the latest Covid-19 guidelines): You'll be matched with another solo traveler of the same gender.

Private Room: Have your own room, subject to availability, for a supplemental cost of $1,225. After booking your trip, please request a private room when you fill out your traveler information form and we’ll add the option to your booking and final balance.

Activity Level

Travelers should feel comfortable walking three to four miles over the course of each day, remaining on their feet for long periods of time, going up and down stairs, and walking on uneven terrain.

When planning your travel, we recommend that you arrive in Tokyo by 3 p.m. on Day 1 and depart from Osaka anytime on Day 9 (or later, if interested in the self-led extension). If you'd like assistance booking flights, let us know and we'll connect you to our flight specialists.

This trip is suitable for those with shellfish allergies and those wishing to avoid pork, however as its focus is on Japanese cuisine, it is not recommended for strict vegans or vegetarians. While a gluten-free diet can be accommodated, it can be challenging, as many dishes and sauces, such as soy, contain wheat flour.
