Trip Overview

Join us for an immersive, 11-day journey across northern India in the midst of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. As we weave our way from Delhi to Udaipur, we'll wander centuries-old ruins, glimpse towering forts and palaces, take a private cooking class, and witness the sun rise over the Taj Mahal. Our adventure begins in the heart of India’s capital, where we'll be welcomed by our expert local guide who will help us navigate the bustling labyrinth of streets and sensory overload. We'll journey south to wander the stunning walled city of Agra, where a local family will allow us to partake in their Diwali festivities before heading west to the "Pink City" of Jaipur, where we'll wind our way in and out of bazaars, palaces, and havelis. We'll continue on to Jodhpur, the "Blue City," overlooked by the soaring Mehrangarh Fort, and visit the village of Bishnoi before our final leg in Udaipur, home to a series of majestic lake palaces.

  • Diwali celebrations with a local family
  • Royal cities and traditional villages of Rajasthan
  • Taj Mahal and Agra Fort
  • Udaipur's lake palaces
  • Chats with historians, chefs, and local experts

Itineraries and daily schedules are subject to change. We expect to do everything listed in the itinerary, though the order may be rearranged based on weather or other local conditions.

Utpal Kaul
An accomplished scholar of Indian history, Utpal Kaul is one of the region’s most experienced trip leaders. He’s also a keen observer of India’s profoundly complex culture and politics, and a fantastic storyteller. During drives and over leisurely meals, he’ll regale you with stories of his brushes with celebrity, Indian history’s great dramas, and his childhood in Kashmir. Utpal’s trip-leading career got off to an auspicious start when he led Tenzing Norgay, who along with Sir Edmund Hillary was the first to summit Everest, on an expedition through Kashmir and Ladakh. In the years since, he has led travelers from over 50 countries through many parts of India, and continues to enjoy sharing his stories and insight with visitors today.
