Trip Overview
Overview

Join us in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia and once the heart of Africa’s Roman Empire, as we journey into the Sahara desert and back. We'll loop through a myriad of unique landscapes, wander through winding medinas, relax by ancient oases, and cross a multicolored salt lake. Along the way, we'll explore relics of the many civilizations that once called this land home—from the ruins of Carthage to the remains of Roman amphitheaters. Bounded by endless desert sands and crisp Mediterranean waters, Tunisia’s architecture, culture, and cuisine are as diverse and dynamic as its millenia-old history.

Highlights
  • Ancient ruins and sacred sites
  • Meals and conversations shared with locals
  • Salt lakes and desert oases
  • Stargazing in the Sahara

Arrival & Departure

You should plan to arrive by 3 p.m. on Day 1, and depart anytime on Day 12. Tunis-Carthage International Airport (TUN) connects to a range of flight hubs in Europe and the Middle East. Connecting airlines include Air France, Alitalia, Lufthansa, Emirates, and Qatar Airways. If you’d like help arranging flights, let us know and we'll connect you with our flight specialists.

Activity Level

Travelers should feel comfortable walking three to five miles over the course of each day, and remaining on their feet for long periods of time. We’ll be spending a good amount of time outside and in rural areas, walking up and down stairs, and on dirt paths. We’ll also spend a night camping out in the desert.

Accommodations

With the exception of our night camping in the Sahara, we’ll be staying in a variety of comfortable three- and four-star hotels, all with Western-style private bathroom facilities. For our night out in the desert, we’ll be in nice, pre-set tents (one might even call it “glamping”).

Transportation

Transportation throughout the trip will be in a comfortable, air-conditioned bus. We’ll minimize driving as much as possible—no journey will last more than a few hours, and we’ll make sure to stop regularly.

Trip FAQs

Tunisian food tends to be heavy on lamb and seafood (mainly fish). A vegetarian diet can be accommodated, but in certain places the choices will be very limited, and we’d recommend bringing some other options and snacks. You’ll also find the food often tends to be spicy.
