Trip Overview

Widely considered the birthplace of the Renaissance, Tuscany boasts centuries of extraordinary art and architecture—not to mention ample mystery. Beginning in the historic capital of Florence, our journey will usher us through elaborately frescoed cathedrals, sprawling palaces steeped in history, and museums full of artwork and mysterious curios. While we’ll delve into the majesty and mythos surrounding some of the region’s most iconic royal residences, we’ll also take the time to trace its lesser-known history through secret society meeting spots, ancient villages, and centuries-old pharmacies. We’ll pepper our journey with Tuscany’s equally exquisite food and drink—tucking into lavish meals, sipping wine from local estates, and sampling some of the region’s finest olive oil as we go.

  • Glimpse hidden corners and secret rooms of the Palazzo Vecchio
  • Enjoy an organ concert in the private home of a marquis
  • Explore elaborately frescoed cathedrals and basilicas
  • Wander a sprawling countryside estate and vineyard
  • Visit one of the world’s oldest operating pharmacies

Itineraries and daily schedules are subject to change. We expect to do everything listed in the itinerary, though the order may be rearranged based on weather or other local conditions.

Felipe Trigo
Felipe Trigo is a historian, trip guide, and events whiz with a degree in History from Barcelona University. He curates immersive, dynamic itineraries that explore history through the most surprising and hidden elements within the city, such as visits to normally off-limits private collections and houses, hidden bunkers and shelters, and performance events, theatrical tours, concerts, and dinners in the most unusual locations. Inspired by a special devotion to stage arts, Felipe has directed the underground cabaret company Kriminal Kabarett since 2011. For the past five years, he has served as co-director for Hendrick’s Congress for Curious People in Spain. He has been creating and leading trips for Atlas Obscura since 2018, welcoming travelers to discover the myths and mysteries of Barcelona, Rome, and soon Andalucia and Tuscany.
Claudia Vannucci

Prior to that, she studied the history of architecture and specialized in the history of gardens, researching the Medici’s garden parties. Claudia loves the macabre and bizarre side of art and history, and is particularly fascinated by cemeteries—which happen to feature as the subject of her first book, Cemetery Safari.

Activity Level

Travelers should feel comfortable walking anywhere between two and four miles over the course of each day. You should be comfortable staying on your feet for long stretches at a time, as we’ll be out and about most of each day with time to rest at lunch and dinner, both of which will take place on the later side.

Traveling Solo?

You’re in good company. Solo travelers typically make up about half of our small groups. With curiosity at the center of our experiences, there’s a natural camaraderie that develops over the course of a trip. We have two options for you:

Shared Room (subject to the latest Covid-19 guidelines): You'll be matched with another solo traveler of the same gender.

Private Room: Have your own room, subject to availability, for a supplemental cost of $520 ($540 for 2022 departures). After booking your trip, please request a single room when you fill out your traveler information form and we’ll send a separate invoice for the cost.
