Danna Staaf is an author, artist, and marine biologist who earned a PhD from Stanford University with studies of squid. Her writing has appeared in numerous outlets, including Nautilus and Science as well as Atlas Obscura. Her first book, Squid Empire: The Rise and Fall of the Cephalopods (now retitled Monarchs of the Sea), was named one of the best science books of the year by NPR's Science Friday. Staaf lives in San Jose, California, with her husband, children, cat, and innumerable plush octopuses.
