Trip Overview

Join us on a discovery of South Africa from the Western Cape to the lush bushveld. This is not your ordinary African safari. Starting in Cape Town, a stunningly beautiful city surrounded by mountains and vineyards and a compelling mix of trendy modern and old-world elegance. During our memorable stay in the Mother City, we’ll venture from sea to mountain top, walk in the footsteps of Nelson Mandela, and dive into the colorful and culturally rich Bo-Kaap neighborhood. We then travel to Johannesburg, South Africa's economic hub and a city bursting at the seams with a wealth of art, history, and culture. In Joburg, we discover a fusion of chic sophistication and rustic, inner-city vibe born of Africa's finest creative minds. We’ll explore the inner city’s street art and graffiti, where rejuvenation has exposed a vibrant urban life. It is here the continent can express itself and the results are funky, a little offbeat, and totally captivating. We’ll conclude our trip in the bush at Marataba, a privately managed section of the Marakele National Park. Maratabe is one of South Africa’s most innovative conservation models working to protect the area’s diverse flora and fauna through modern and hands-on conservation practices. Here we’ll join with an expert veterinarian team on a rhino notching experience.

  • Experience the Nelson Mandela story while walking the streets of Cape Town.
  • Kayak among penguins in False Bay.
  • Cycle through Cape Town’s famous wine farms.
  • Explore the origins of Bo-Kaap, the oldest suburb in South Africa.
  • Discover the vibrant inner-city public art of Johannesburg.
  • Join a rhino notching intervention in Marakele National Park.
  • Search for Africa’s Big Five by Land Rover, boat, and on foot at Marataba.

Itineraries and daily schedules are subject to change. We expect to do everything listed in the itinerary, though the order may be rearranged based on weather or other local conditions.

Traveling Solo?

You’re in good company. Solo travelers typically make up about half of our small groups. With curiosity at the center of our experiences, there’s a natural camaraderie that develops over the course of a trip. We have two options for you:

Shared Room: You’ll be matched with another solo traveler of the same gender.

Private Room: Have your own room, subject to availability, for a supplemental cost of $1,595. There are a limited number of private rooms available for this trip. After booking your trip, please request a private room when you fill out your traveler information form and we’ll add the option to your booking and final balance.

On this trip, we will stay in comfortable city hotels in Cape Town and Johannesburg. While on safari, accommodation is in canvas-sided safari tents with an en-suite bathroom (indoor shower, toilet, hot and cold running water) and outdoor lounge.

You should plan to arrive in Cape Town anytime on Day 1. You’ll be met at the airport and transferred to the group hotel. You should plan to depart from Johannesburg on the evening of Day 10.
