About

Beer and Oktoberfest go hand in hand in Munich, both being a source of great pride for Bavarians. While visiting Oktoberfest is certainly one-way visitors can introduce themselves to Munich culture, there is also a calmer way that is open year-round. The Beer and Oktoberfest Museum.

The museum is in fact two small separate museums, one that showcases beer and its history in Bavaria—displaying brewing methods, antique mass', bottles, and stories about the beer barons of yore. The second museum focuses on Oktoberfest and its 200-year origin as a wedding party for King Ludwig I. Inside are old posters, art, and clothing from the 200-year history of the event.

The museum is located inside of one of the oldest townhouses in the city, dating back to 1327, complete with Roman brickwork. The museum was made possible by Ferdinand Schmid, the former head of the Augustiner Brewery, who renovated the building and allowed it to become a museum that opened in 2005.

The museum also has a traditional bar where visitors can partake in a beer tasting.
