Beginning as a Spanish tower in 1737, the St. Augustine Lighthouse has stood for over 200 years as a beacon for countless ships traveling along the east coast of northern Florida. It has been rebuilt twice, once in 1824 and once in 1878, and currently stands as the seventh-tallest lighthouse in the United States at a whopping 219 steps.

The property also houses the former living quarters of the lighthouse keepers and their assistance, various maritime artifacts as well as active archeological research and boat building. One of the buildings allows visitors to watch archeologists clean and process different archeological finds from on the grounds and in the nearby waters.

The lighthouse is also noteworthy for its purported history of haunting and supernatural activity. It’s been reported to have unexplained sounds of footsteps, children giggling, unexplained children’s footprints, and EMF activity.

Know Before You Go

Tickets are $14.95 for adults and $12.95 for children. There are no elevators in the lighthouse so be prepared to climb all 219 steps.
