What We’ll Do

In this workshop, you will touch fluffy wax cappings straight from the hive, and chew and taste raw propolis. You'll also try three different kinds of honey—the most obvious gift of the hive. You'll learn how these materials, which are essential for hive health, can be used for human medicine, such as herbal infused oils, topical salves, and balms. Next we’ll discuss native plants and their importance to bee and human health, including recommendations for what you can plant in your own region. Finally you'll sample prepared balms and salves, and create your own skin-healing salve to take home.

Where We’ll Be

The Hillman City Collaboratory is an incubator for social change. Located in the historic Hillman City neighborhood of Rainier Valley, the Collaboratory is a warm gathering space that supports the abundant brilliance in the neighborhood.

About Your Host
Bob
Bob

Hi. I’m Bob, a member of the Atlas Obscura community.

I fell in love with beekeeping living in a garden cottage surrounded by skyscrapers as the writer-in-residence for Seattle's Hugo House. With 12 years experience tending honey bees (at one time 150 colonies), I'm also a leader in pollinator conservation. Founder of the non-profit The Common Acre, I was co-Primary Investigator on a four-year USDA study and instigated the Flight Path and Green Line projects with Sea-Tac Airport and Seattle City Light. I'm excited to co-host this workshop with Shannon Welles of Hypha, an organization dedicated to the interchange between art and earth. Shannon is a Washington-native plant steward and has trained in Pacific Northwest ethnobotany, medicinal wildcrafting, permaculture, and earthen building. She holds an MFA in Arts Leadership.
