Our Favorite Newly Added Places Across Africa

Art, culture, nature, and more.

Africa is a beautiful continent filled with vibrant cultures, lush ecosystems, and rich histories. In an effort to add more diversity to our ever-expanding database and touch every corner of the globe, we’ve been pushing to find new places in the least represented regions of Atlas. Since starting the effort, we have added dozens of new entries from both users and staff. From hidden Kenya to wondrous Lesotho, we wanted to showcase a few of our favorite new additions.

In Kigali, Rwanda stands a building that is a shining symbol of progress in women’s rights. Originally founded to combat gender-based violence and improve inequality, the Nyamirambo Women’s Center evolved into a business collective aimed at educating women in handmade crafts—complete with a community library. On the campus of the Okomfo Anokye teaching hospital in Ghana is a legendary weapon. Anokye was the leader of the Ashanti people and once owned a sword said to be a symbol of peace and unity. According to legend, the weapon was plunged into the grounds near the hospital well over 300 years ago. From 2,000-year-old cave paintings to a locomotive that traverses Eritrea, here’s a collection of places we can’t wait to visit in person.
