About

Frank Buhl, a steel magnate and philanthropist, saw his dream of the nation's only free golf course realized in 1914. The nine-hole course belongs to the Buhl Farm Trust, alongside the adjacent park which is privately owned but free to the public, unusual for most American parks which are publicly owned.

Buhl was the owner of Sharon Steel, a job that made him millions of dollars. He donated much of that fortune to the local community. According to PGA of America, Buhl bought 300 acres of land in 1911 that would become Buhl Farm Park, which includes an 11-acre lake, swimming pool, tennis courts, bocce courts, trails, and of course, a golf course.

The course opened in 1914. It has nine holes spread out over 30 acres, with no sand traps or water hazards. While it may not have the frills of a fancier golf course—there's no clubhouse, pro shop, or snack bar—cart rentals are cheap and walking is free. Simply check in at the front desk and enjoy nine holes free. There's also an on-site driving range.
