Hornby Uintotherium

Plaque on Canada's Hornby Island commemorating a fantastical creature from Kcymaerxthaere.

Created by Geographer-at-Large Eames Demetrios, the Kcymaerxthaere project divides what we call the Earth into a system of 29 major rezhns and bills itself as a “global work of multivalent storytelling.” It has been likened to a novel with every page in a different place.  As Demetrios has said, Kcymaerxthaere is a “parallel universe that intersects with much of our linear Earth, but with different stories, creatures, peoples, even laws of physics and qualities of existence.” What makes the Kcymaerxthaere project particularly interesting is that Demetrios installs informative markers and historical sites at the locations in our world that connect to his world, creating real world intersections with his imagined universe. He has installed about a hundred of these markers and historical sites so far and hopes to install hundreds more by the time he is finished.

The plaque on Canada’s Hornby Island concerns a remarkable creature known as the Hornby Uintotherium. It is one of the smallest of the Uintotheria and usually quite docile, although occasionally a bit stubborn one can do some damage. Uintotheria look somewhatt like rhinoceros, according to lore, but they have the strangest knob and protrusions on their heads. Some people say they are shy because of how they look.

(And don’t miss the Denman Island Ferry looking for the Uintotheria–they are definitely quite elusive.  The marker should be easier to find.)

Know Before You Go

Take BC ferry from Horseshoe Bay in Vancouver to Nanaimo, drive up Vancouver Island to Buckley Bay (45 minutes). From there, take the ferry to Denman Island. Drive across Denman Island and take the ferry to Hornby Island. The plaque is installed at the Thatch Pub, right where the ferry from Denman island lands.
