Los Albaricoques, Spain

This small Spanish village still pays homage to the Spaghetti Western films that were shot there in the 1960s.

In the 1960s, an Italian filmmaker and his crew went to this small village in Almería, Spain. The filmmaker was Sergio Leone, and Clint Eastwood was the main actor. The movie they’d come to work on was A Fistful of Dollars.

At the time, Los Albaricoques was a small, impoverished village. Its production brought some much-needed economic resources into the town, as many of the locals worked on the film.

In the following years, scenes from the other films in the Dollars Trilogy were shot in the village. It gained the nickname “Agua Caliente” because that’s what it’s called in the movie For a Few Dollars More.

Today, most of the village’s houses have been refurbished, stripping away much of the Old West feel. But some streets are named in honor of the films and the people who worked on them. As you walk along some of the streets, you’ll see posters showing pictures of the village in the ’60s and the scenes that were shot there.

Know Before You Go

You can go on a “western tour” in an appropriate costume if you stay at the small local hotel. Be mindful of the sun and heat, and be sure to bring plenty of water, especially if you're exploring in the summer.
