Mojave Shoe Station

Help improve Atlas Obscura by expanding Mojave Shoe Station with additional information or photos.
In Rice, California, close to the Heart of the Mojave, a plethora of shoes hang over the decaying remains of a small gas station. Though where this tradition started is unknown, locals say that the area originally had a Shoe Tree.
After the tree collapsed, the shoe collection moved to the metal roof of the abandoned gas station. An overturned palm tree and tower of tires on the property sport similar used soles.
