About

Nitschke Mounds Park is located approximately 45 minutes northwest of Milwaukee, near the southern end of the Horicon Marsh.

The property has 37 preserved animal-shaped effigies as well as conical and linear mounds and is considered a sacred space for Native Americans.  The preserved mounds represent one of the best-surviving examples of the Mound Builders culture that once occupied the area.

There are walking trails that go around the effigies and through a wooded area by a pond. There is also a natural spring at the park that fills the pond but it is not set up to be potable.
