Composed of hundred of petrified remains of an ancient forest covered by a volcano 20 million years ago. The Petrified Forest of Lesbos (or “Lesvos”) is now a rocky landscape, designated as a Greek Natural Monument and a UNESCO Geopark. A related museum was established in 1994.
Although very rare, other petrified forests can be found in the United States in California, Arizona and Argentina.
Know Before You Go
The forest is located near the village of Sigri, and The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is in Sigri proper.
