St. Peter’s Rock Grotto is a beautiful, idyllic spot located in the tiny village of Farmer, South Dakota (Population: 15). It was constructed between 1926 and 1933. The grotto was constructed in the Byzantine style by Fr. Peter N. Scheier. using natural materials, often ones he purchased on trips to the Black Hills.

The Grotto was once surrounded by a Roman Catholic elementary school, but that institution closed in 1959. The Grotto underwent a formal restoration in 2001, and at that time it was inducted into the National Register of Historic Places.

Know Before You Go

The Grotto seems to have no formal address listed, but it's at the northeast edge of a tiny village - you can't miss it. It's located on a lawn immediately south of 3rd Street, between 426th Avenue (literally the only road in or out of Farmer) and Joe Street.
