This 50-foot-tall, arch-shaped memorial is dedicated to the war correspondents who died while covering wars. It was built in 1896 by George “Gath” Townsend, a Civil War correspondent. It’s one of the only memorials in the world for journalists killed in combat.  The arch, along with Townsend’s home, form the Gathland Maryland state park. The Appalachian Trail passes through the park.
