Most visitors see this beautiful island from up above, but you can actually set foot on the island itself.
A well known tourist attraction on the island of Saipan, Bird Island Sanctuary is home to thousands of birds and other marine species. A short walk down stairs from the parking area, you'll find yourself standing on a high cliff overlooking the vast blue ocean and Bird Island. But instead of viewing this attraction from above, you can actually see it from ground level.
A short hike through a steep hill with jungle surroundings brings you to a secluded beach with the view of Bird Island. It is accessible year-round but you should avoid it during rainy season as the path becomes slippery and muddy. When the tide is calm and right, you can actually walk to the island. You'll be welcomed by deep pools of abundant ocean fish and of course, birds. This is a marine protected area, no fishing and hunting is allowed which makes this place rich in wildlife.

Know Before You Go
There are two ways to get to the beach. Before reaching Bird Island Sanctuary, you should pass an unmarked dirt road and a trail further ahead both on the left side of the road. When taking the dirt road, you'll know you're on the right path when you see the Marine Protected Area sign. The alternative route guides you in towards the jungle with a hilltop view of Bird Island and connecting to the dirt road path. Any good car can access the dirt road. Go on a sunny day, preferably during low tide and wear good shoes.
