This is the stump of a giant western redcedar tree, estimated to have been 20 feet in diameter, 200 feet tall, and approximately 1,000 years old. After it caught fire in the mid-1800s, the tree stump was cut into an archway and moved to a concrete base. It was even driven through by Crown Prince Olav and Princess Martha of Norway on a visit to the United States in 1939.
The tree stump was moved to Smokey Point rest area in 1971 to help people emotionally recover from the horrors of Seattle traffic as they head north on I-5.
