Open Pit of an ancient Asbestos Mine at Thetford Mines

A scenic overlook of a pit mine hundreds of metres deep filled with blue water

Open pit mines and their dumps are common in Thetford Mines and surrounding areas. All the mines are closed, but there remains in the country these proofs of asbestos extraction. A turquoise water has now filled all the old mines. Surrounded by piles of their own mined rock and gravel, the pits are fascinating, dwarfing the neighboring towns. An observation deck has been set up beside the BC Mine, closed since 1997. From Highway 112, the view of the dumps is quite spectacular.
