In this open field on October 19, 1781, British forces led by General Charles Cornwallis surrendered to Colonial and French forces led by General George Washington. This effectively brought an end to the American Revolution.
Surrender Field is part of Yorktown Battlefield, a unit of Colonial National Historical Park. The other unit of the park, Jamestown Colony just a few miles away, makes for interesting bookends as you can see the beginning and end of British colonialism in America in one short visit.
