The Big Elk
It is the world's largest elk-sculpture
The big, silver elk in Stor-Elvdal municipality is the world’s largest elk-sculpture. It is situated at Bjøråa between Oslo and Trondheim by the national road 3.
While it is an impressive sculpture, it has a second purpose: that of reminding motorists of the possibility that wildlife is in the proximity of the roads.
The sculpture was designed by artist Linda Bakke and was created with the help of Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA), in an attempt to reduce the number of accidents. Storelgen (the elk) is located in the resting stop between Oslo and Trondheim, to encourage travelers to take a break and rest, interrupting the monotony of driving.
