For more than a century, this cement replica of Egyptian mythology’s deadliest riddle-enthusiast has watched over different parts of Long Island. Located in Blue Point as far back as 1911, today, the miniature sphinx presides over the Fontana Cement Co. in Bayport.
To this day, a plaque at the base of the statue says, “She who climbs to the Sphinx’s head, a millionaire will surely wed.” Lest any prospective present-day gold diggers are tempted to put the inscription to the test, a sign underneath points out that climbing on this beast is prohibited.
