The first thing you see on the left-hand side when entering the small, idyllic beach town of Blokhus in northwestern Denmark is this mega-tall, golden, pyramid-shaped sandcastle. It’s so tall that in the summer of 2021, it was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the tallest in the world. The castle is a towering 69.5 feet high, has a 98 feet base, and weighs 6,400 tons.

To make the structure survive the winters, up to 10% of clay was mixed with the angular sand. There is also a layer of glue on top.

Characteristics from the region, such as lighthouses, marine animals, and beach houses, have been integrated into the sculpture. There is also a reminder of the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic.

It took a team of international sand sculptors, supervised by Dutch artist Wilfred Stijger, a little over one month to build the sandcastle.
